Vaccines Required for Doodle Dogs

To ensure your Doodle Dog stays healthy and protected from common diseases among canines, it is important to give them timely vaccinations. This article will discuss the vaccines required for Doodle dogs, their importance, and the recommended schedules for vaccinations.

Core Vaccines for Doodle Dogs

Core vaccines are important for all dogs. They protect against severe, and highly contagious diseases. The American Animal Hospital Association advises the following core vaccines for Doodle dogs and other canine breeds:

Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious infection in the dog’s gastrointestinal tract. Dogs experience vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. It can be fatal for young puppies.

Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) affects a dog’s gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems. Symptoms include coughing, discharge from the eyes and nose, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and seizures.

Rabies  affects the central nervous system and can be fatal once symptoms appear. It can be transmitted to other animals or humans through saliva contact. The rabies vaccine is not only crucial for your dog’s health but also for public safety. It is required by law in most places.

Non-Core Vaccines for Doodle Dogs

Non-core vaccines are administered based on a dog’s specific risk factors, lifestyle, and geographical location. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if your Doodle dog needs any of the following non-core vaccines:

Bordetella Bronchiseptica (kennel cough). This vaccine protects against a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes respiratory illness in dogs. It is recommended for Doodle dogs that frequently interact with other dogs, attend doggie daycare, or are boarded in kennels.

Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) This vaccine protects against the canine Flu virus, which causes respiratory illness in dogs. It is suggested for dogs that may often be in close contact with other dogs. Also for those living in known outbreak areas.

Leptospirosis vaccine protects against bacterial infections that may cause kidney and liver damage.  It is recommended for Doodle dogs that spend time outdoors, particularly in areas with wildlife or standing water.

Lyme Disease vaccine protects against a tick-borne bacterial infection that can cause joint pain, fever, and kidney damage. It is recommended for Doodle dogs living in or traveling to regions where ticks are prevalent.

Vaccination Schedule for Doodle Dogs

Vaccination schedules may vary depending on your Doodle dog’s age, health condition, and unique risk factors. Your veterinarian will help you create the right schedule for your dog. The core vaccines are given to puppies at six to eight weeks old in a series of shots. Thereafter, each for three to four weeks until they are 16 weeks old. Here is a typical schedule:

  • 6–8 weeks: First round of CPV, CDV, and CAV-2 vaccines
  • 10–12 weeks: Second round of CPV, CDV, and CAV-2 vaccines
  • 14–16 weeks: Third round of CPV, CDV, and CAV-2 vaccines
  • 12–16 weeks: First rabies vaccine (depending on local regulations)

After the initial puppy vaccinations, your Doodle dog will need booster shots to maintain immunity. The AAHA recommends the following booster schedules:

  • CPV, CDV, and CAV-2: Booster one year after the initial series, then every three years thereafter
  • Rabies: Booster one year after the initial vaccine, then every one to three years, depending on local regulations and the specific vaccine used

Non-core vaccine schedules vary depending on the specific vaccine and your dog’s risk factors. Your veterinarian will provide guidance on the appropriate schedule for any non-core vaccines your Doodle dog may require.

By following a proper vaccination schedule and working with your veterinarian, you can protect your Doodle dog from potentially life-threatening diseases and give them a happy and healthy life.
