Airedoodle Doodle Dog Owner’s Guide & Overview, Tips

Posted by

An Airedoodle is a wonderful mixed breed dog  that is a hybrid of an Airedale Terrier and a Poodle, usually a Standard or Miniature Poodle.

History of Airedoodle Doodle Dogs

The Airedale Terrier’s history traces back to the 19th century in the Aire Valley of Yorkshire, England. They were originally bred to hunt otters and small game. Extremely intelligent and energetic, Airedale Terriers were utilized as  messengers as well as ambulance and guard dogs during World War I. Their courage displayed on the battlefield enhanced their reputation as hardworking and reliable.

Today, Airedales are used as search and rescue dogs, police dogs, and therapy dogs.  They are also highly valued as family pets.

The exact origins of the Airedoodle are not clear, but the breed is a result of crossing the Airedale Terrier and the Poodle, aiming to create a dog that’s friendly, intelligent, and sports the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. The breed has gained popularity due to its combination of endearing traits and attractive appearance.

Selecting an Airedoodle Doodle Dog

Understanding the lineage of both parents of your Airedoodle is crucial when selecting one for your family. Responsible breeders will have ensured that the parent dogs are tested for common genetic diseases.

Airedoodles adapt easily to various living situations! They are relatively quiet, mostly barking when they sense a potential threat. Thanks to their Airedale lineage, they’re known for their high energy and love for outdoor activities. Airedoodles are intelligent, inheriting this trait from both their parent breeds, making training typically a breeze.

Airedoodles get along well with people of all ages, and they are patient with young children. They make excellent companions for seniors due to their moderate exercise needs. If you’re allergic, keep in mind that Airedoodles are low shedders, but some might still cause mild allergies.

While Airedoodles are intuitive and quick learners, it’s essential to train them to understand and navigate their surroundings. They might occasionally exhibit a dash of the Airedale’s independence, which means they could wander if not watched closely.

Size and Lifespan of Airedoodles

Airedoodles can stand between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh anywhere between 40 and 70 pounds, depending on the size of the parent dogs. This gives them a solid medium-to-large stature. Their typical lifespan is between 10 and 15 years.

Health and Maintenance of Airedoodles

Airedoodles are generally healthy dogs, but they could potentially inherit some health issues from their parent breeds, such as hip dysplasia, allergies, cataracts, and bloat. Regular check-ups with a vet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can prevent or manage these issues.

Their ears can be somewhat floppy, making them prone to infections if not kept clean and dry. Regularly cleaning their ears with a vet-recommended solution can help prevent infections. Also, remember to keep their ears dry after bathing or swimming.

Airedoodles often have large, expressive eyes. Maintain eye health by gently trimming the fur around the eyes that can cause irritation, and you could use a vet-recommended rinse to clean and moisturize them regularly.

Personality and Behavioral Traits of Airedoodle Doodle Dogs

Airedoodles are known for their friendly and outgoing nature. They are affectionate and get along well with family members of all ages. Thanks to their smart Poodle lineage, Airedoodles are highly trainable and quick to pick up new commands.

They are social dogs who love meeting new people and animals. Airedoodles adapt well to a variety of living situations, from apartments to larger homes with yards, provided they receive enough exercise and mental stimulation. Despite their larger size, they have a moderate energy level and will require regular exercise to stay healthy and prevent boredom.

Airedoodles tend to form strong bonds with their families and may experience separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods.

Nutrition and Diet for Airedoodle Doodle Dogs

Choosing high-quality dog food appropriate for your Airedoodle’s age, size, and activity level is vital. Here are general guidelines for nutrition and feeding:

  • Feed them based on their age, size, and activity level. Puppies, adults, and senior dogs have different nutritional needs.
  • Puppies should be fed 3–4 times daily. After they are 6 months old, switch to twice daily feedings.
  • For adult Airedoodles, feed them twice a day or follow your vet’s recommendations.
  • Choose food that is free of artificial additives, fillers, or by-products.
  • Always provide fresh water for your Airedoodle.

Regular vet check-ups and monitoring your dog’s weight and overall health will ensure they receive proper nutrition.

Grooming an Airedoodle Doodle Dog

Airedoodles are charming with their strong bodies and expressive eyes. Their coats can vary from dog to dog, with some having curly Poodle-like hair, and others sporting the Airedale’s wavy fur. Regular grooming can prevent matting and keep the coat looking its best.

The coat color can also vary greatly and may include black, brown, white, gray, cream, or red, and various combinations . Some Airedoodles may inherit the “tuxedo” pattern of the Poodle, while others might have a more solid coat color.

Check their almond shaped eyes regularly for signs of irritation, and keep their floppy ears clean and dry to prevent infection.
